The Foundation to an Internet Business is the Website

A website is an entity on the World Wide Web with interconnecting pages that define what your business is. It explains to a potential client what your business can offer them. It is important to make it attractive and clear. It should be esthetically pleasing to the eye. It should be easy to read and have tools for the viewer to contact your business. Make your website interesting, but not so overly complicated with graphics or words that the viewer wants to leave.

When interviewing potential web developers look at their portfolio and ask yourself if the designs coincide with your business philosophy. Ask the web designer if there is a backend so that you can make changes without calling the designer. The website backend is an advancing technology. It enables you to have control over your site. The backend gives you control over changing content. However, make sure the web designer is available to manage more complex features you may wish to implement.

There are two important components to a website.

The first is called the creative concept. This is the look and feel of the site. It generally has a banner on the top that lets the viewer know what company or product they are investigating. It has a menu of selections that take them to more detailed pages of information. Your business can be defined by the separate pages explaining the aspects you want to portray on your business website. Give the viewer different ways to get to these pages. The creative concept is generally shown on all pages of the site.

The second component to your site is the content.  This is made up of text and graphics that tell the viewer what your business does. It gives the viewer information that will attract them to what you do or sell. It is important that the content is clear and easy to read. The content should not be all text or all graphics. There is a balance of text and graphics that allows the viewer multiple ways to learn about your business. All aspects of the site should be search engine optimized so viewers can easy find your business site.

When planning to build a website, consider your budget. Have an idea of what you can get that is within your budget. You can get a simple, template website at Godaddy.com or Yahoo.com. However, you will not have the functionality that is available from a web designer. If you are considering a flash site, be prepared to spend a large amount of money for the flash design. Web development takes a lot of time so be prepared to compensate your designer for the time. Some web designers are only interested in constructing as many websites as possible. Think about your future needs and ask the designer if he will also help you market your business site.  Some web developers will take a vested interest in your internet business.

Your business website is the foundation for marketing your business on the internet. It is the starting point. It is the first component to making your site successful. It is not the only component. Other aspects that are important include backend technology, search engine optimization and internet marketing. Don’t forget to consider these components when planning your business website. Start with the foundation and build it into a strong business entity on the World Wide Web.
